HILTON HEAD, SC

Nestled along the South Atlantic coast, the boot shaped barrier island of Hilton Head is located just off the southernmost tip of South Carolina, where the Gulf Stream creates a temperate climate that makes world class golf on the island a year round treat. A stunning golf destination for visitors from all over the world, Hilton Head Island offers 12 miles of white sand beaches, superior shopping experiences, award winning dining, and five star resort destinations in addition to dozens of world renowned golf courses.

Perhaps the best known of all of the distinguished golf courses on Hilton Head Island is Harbour Town Golf Links and it trademark lighthouse. Consistently holding the #1 ranking in all of South Carolina by Golf Magazine, Harbour Town Golf Links has been the home of the PGA Tour's Verizon Heritage tournament since 1969. Designed by celebrated golf course architect Pete Dye, Harbour Town rewards accuracy and finesse over strength and distance. The par three holes are generally considered one of the toughest collections ever put together and the par-four 18th is always one of the most feared finishing holes on the PGA Tour.

Guests of The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa are in for a treat as well. Located on the pristine sandy white beaches of Port Royal Plantation, The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa offers southern hospitality at its best. In addition to the vast array of recreational activities located on site (bicycle/jogging paths and 16 tennis courts featuring all three Grand Slam surfaces) or just a minute away (shopping, kayaking, sailing, deep sea fishing, and horseback riding to name a few), the three championship golf courses on site, Barony, Planters Row, and Robber's Row are the areas true gems.

The Barony Course, designed in 1963 by George Cobb and Willard Byrd, is relatively generous off the tee with small greens that are well guarded by deep bunkers, lagoons and Bermuda rough. Recognized by Golf Magazine as a Silver Medal Course, the Barony course is one that requires accuracy and touch to produce pars and birdies.

Planter's Row, another Willard Byrd design, opened in 1983 and served host to the Hilton Head Seniors International in 1985. Also named a Silver Medal Course by Golf Magazine, Planter's Row offers tree lined fairways, treacherous bunkers, and large, undulating greens. Water comes into play on the parkland style golf course often so keeping the ball in play is at a premium.

Robber's Row, a local favorite, is located on the marsh side of the resort atop what were once Civil War grounds and the historic town of Port Royal. Recently renovated under the direction of Pete Dye, the course winds though Live Oaks and beautiful Magnolias. Again, players are rewarded more for accuracy than length as generous fairways lead to well bunkered, undulating greens.

Spinnaker Resorts on Hilton Head Island offers travelers five distinctive properties to choose from all located on the south end of the island. Additionally, individual properties offer additional amenities such as indoor and outdoor heated pools, fitness centers, cable television and VCR's, gas grills, Whirlpool tubs in Master Suites, bicycle rental, daily housekeeping and more. All of this is conveniently located within walking distance to the best beaches, the finest shopping, and the areas most acclaimed dining and nightlife which make Spinnaker an excellent destination for families and golf groups alike.

Palmetto Dunes Resort, located in the heart of Hilton Head Island, offers three award winning layouts designed by a trio of the most recognizable golf course designers in the world. Consistently honored by virtually every major golf publication as one of the best golf resorts in America, Palmetto Dunes Resort accommodates golfers of all skill levels, from the novice to the seasoned professional. Palmetto Dunes Resort guests can enjoy one, two, three, or four bedroom condos many of which offer breathtaking views of the golf courses. If you are looking to stay closer to the Atlantic, Palmetto Dunes Resort is a traveler's paradise offering the largest number of oceanfront rooms on the island, all of which have private terraces.

The oldest and probably most player friendly and picturesque of the Palmetto Dunes Courses, the Robert Trent Jones Course winds through 11 miles of lagoons, palmetto stands, and thick marsh. Wide open fairways and large greens make this course very playable and enjoyable for golfers of all skill level. The George Fazio Course offers a serious challenge to the accomplished players. Long and well guarded with huge bunkers, the Fazio Course requires length and accuracy as the rolling terrain make the long par four holes even that much more difficult. The newest of the Palmetto Dunes Courses, the Arthur Hills Course features a noticeable absence of rough and fairways bunkers, however, lagoons come into play on 10 holes and the Atlantic breeze is always there to help blow wayward shots further off line.

While these 54 holes provide some of the best golf on Hilton Head Island, there are plenty of other diversions on the Palmetto Dunes Resort. Within the 2000 acres you'll find three miles of beautiful beach, a 25-court Tennis Center, nature trails, 28 swimming pools, 11 miles of winding lagoons, and 20 irresistible restaurants. The resort's marina community, Shelter Cove Harbour, overlooks Broad Creek and offers a wide variety of galleries and shops.

Of course, there are many other world-class accommodations and golf courses in the Hilton Head area. Information on the additional properties can be found by clicking the appropriate buttons ("courses" and "lodging") located toward the top of the web site.
